What do catching frogs, campfires and wishing on stars have to do with Autism? At first glance, not much. However, at the Dunkirk Camp & Conference Center they are a foundation for family time, peace and renewal. In today’s busy world it is difficult for many families to find that time when they can relax and reconnect with one another. Having a child with Autism can make that even more difficult and in many ways essential. Kids with Autism and their families need a unique situation to feel emotionally safe to rejuvenate and play together.
Our One Piece at a Time Retreat will do just that for families. This camp is for families with children with Autism (up to 12 years old). We want to give parents the opportunity to learn some strategies and activities that will help them better understand their child(ren) and work with them when they return home. The weekend will be filled with activities for the child, parents, and siblings. There will be opportunities to learn and share or to just relax with volunteer support for each family. These volunteers will help facilitate camp life for families as well as lend a helping hand when they can. Activities will include Creek Walking, Sensory activities, Arts and Crafts, Social Games and more! DCC is a place where all children can just be kids and where family time is center stage. So, pack up the kids and let us take care of the cooking and cleaning… All you need to do is have fun!
